Coordinator - Competitive Sports

Southern Illinois University is seeking a dynamic, innovative and student development-centered individual for the position of Coordinator of Competitive Sports. This position is responsible for developing, coordinating, implementing and evaluating the SIU Competitive Sports program including Intramural Sports and Sport Club programs. The successful candidate will promote and cultivate an environment that values inclusiveness and diversity, engage in evidence-based decision making, and promote student development and learning. The position manages sensitive issues including discipline of student employees who have demonstrated unsatisfactory work or inappropriate behavior. This position will also have significant impact on the image of Recreational Sports and Services through the visibility associated with being a public representative of the department in numerous events and activities.

Typical work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM including some early morning or evening hours, weekends, holidays and the ability to attend on and off campus events.

Position provides oversight and direction of student office assistants, student officials and supervisors, interns, and volunteers.

Examples of Work Performed

Area Management:

  • Administer, develop, organize, plan, implement, and evaluate an intramural sports and sport club program
    • Assesses current activities and researches industry trends to compile a diverse array of offerings to best meet students’ needs
    • Oversees league and  practice schedules, submits and manages facility space reservations for league play and practice schedules
  • Coordinates, promotes, supervises and evaluates league play, club sport practices and events, and assigned special events
    • Serves as an official when necessary
  • Work collaboratively with other members of Recreational Sports and Services and Student Affairs division staff to conduct special events and programs for the campus community

Administrative Duties:

  • Regularly reports assessment and statistical data pertaining to operations, participation, and staff development

Human Relations & Student Development:

  • Implements competitive sports staff development including training, onboarding of new staff and professional development

Supervision & Advisement:

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate 50+ student officials, supervisors, and office assistants including positive recognition as well as follow established disciplinary procedures as necessary
  • Oversee Sport Clubs’ executive board processes, travel requests, disciplinary procedures, and facility scheduling for practices and competitions

Fiscal & Resource Management:

  • Report competitive sports student payroll and operational budget expenses to the Associate Director of Programs
  • Oversee competitive sports equipment maintenance, security, inventory, upkeep/cleaning, and organization
  • Oversee Sport Clubs’ executive board fund allocations processes and expense reporting

 Risk Management:

  • Enforce departmental policies and procedures designed to reduce risk in the event of severe weather, incidents, accidents, and when teams are travelling
  • Outline policies and procedures for new competitive sports student staff as well as participants to insure safety, care, and wellbeing of all involved

 Promotions & Marketing:

  • Collaborates in competitive sports programming across campus including Registered Student Organizations, Greek Affairs, Intercollegiate Athletics, and community groups
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Marketing, advertise and market competitive sports program offerings and services across campus

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

This Coordinator will:

  • Orchestrate a comprehensive Intramural Sports Program, including budgeting, organization, administration, and promotion
  • Lead and develop officials training, sports scheduling, game supervision, and the hiring and evaluation of student officials and supervisors
  • Assist with managing the Recreational Sports facilities and supervision of Student Workers including needs assessments and evaluations
  • Initiate and develop a new Sports Club Program, including budgeting, organization, administration, and promotion
  • Assist with events such as Orientation, Weeks of Welcome, and cross-campus collaborations
  • Participate on divisional and university committees as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience in Intramural Sports and/or Sports Club organization and administration
  • Officiating experience and knowledge of sports rules
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Motivation, enthusiasm, and attention to detail
  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced team environment.

Certifications/Licenses & Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Recreation, Sports Administration, Kinesiology, Physical Education
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in campus recreation setting
  • Undergraduate experience in Intramural Sports and/or Sports Clubs. Minimum two (2) years officiating experience
  • CPR & First Aid certification preferred
  • Verified experience in the development of sports officials, functional knowledge and demonstrated ability to learn new rules and regulations for a variety of sports, and the implementation of competitive sport offerings
  • Verified ability to officiate at least one of these sports: Basketball, Soccer, Softball, Volleyball, and/or Flag Football
  • Experience with IMLeagues and Fusion or similar software systems
  • Verified experience with hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of staff in a campus recreation setting
