Southern Illinois University is seeking a dynamic, innovative and student development-centered individual for the position of Coordinator of Fitness. This position is responsible for developing, coordinating, implementing and evaluating the SIU group fitness, instructional fitness classes, and personal training programs. The successful candidate will promote and cultivate an environment that values inclusiveness and diversity, engage in evidence-based decision making, and promote student development and learning. The position manages sensitive issues including discipline of student employees who have demonstrated unsatisfactory work or inappropriate behavior. This position will also have a significant impact on the image of Recreational Sports and Services through the visibility associated with being a public representative of the department in numerous events and activities.

Typical work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM including some early morning or evening hours, weekends, holidays and the ability to attend on and off campus events.

Position provides oversight and direction of a Fitness program assistant, fitness instructors, personal trainers, interns, and volunteers.

Examples of Work Performed

Area Management:

  • Administer, develop, plan, implement, organize, and evaluate a comprehensive group fitness and personal training program
    • Assesses current activities and researches industry trends to compile a diverse array of offerings to best meet patron needs
    • Oversees class schedule, monitors and maintains in-person and online registration processes, and responds to participant inquiries
  • Coordinates, promotes, supervises, and evaluates revenue-generating group fitness, small group training, personal training, and associated customized fitness programming
    • Serves as an instructor when necessary
  • Work collaboratively with other members of Recreational Sports and Services and Student Affairs division staff to conduct special events and programs for the campus community

Administrative Duties:

  • Regularly reports assessment and statistical data pertaining to operations, participation, and staff development

 Human Relations & Student Development:

  • Implements fitness staff development including training, onboarding of new staff and professional development

 Supervision & Advisement:

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate 25+ group fitness instructors and personal trainers including positive recognition as well as follow established disciplinary procedures as necessary

 Fiscal & Resource Management:

  • Report group fitness and personal training student payroll and operational budget expenses to the Associate Director of Programs
  • Oversee group fitness and small group training equipment maintenance, security, inventory, and organization

 Risk Management:

  • Demonstrate the proper use of equipment, outline policies and procedures for new students and members to help familiarize them with group fitness and personal training programming

 Promotions & Marketing:

  • Collaborates in fitness programming across campus including Registered Student Organizations, Greek Affairs, Intercollegiate Athletics, and community groups
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Marketing, advertise and market group fitness, personal training program offerings, and services across campus

 Knowledge Required for the Job

  • Knowledge and experience in the development and implementation of a comprehensive group fitness, personal training, and adaptive fitness programs.
  • Knowledge and experience with hiring, training, evaluation and certification of group fitness instructors and personal trainers.
  • Knowledge of budgeting theory and practice.
  • Ability to maintain records and reports with regard to participant numbers, classes offered, and personal training sessions completed.
  • Ability to conduct and document equipment inventory.
  • Knowledge of Fitness principles and methods for training, teaching and instructing individuals and groups in a campus recreation setting.
  • Knowledge and ability to inspect facility for risk management or maintenance concerns and resolve problems independently prior to activity.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Fusion or similar software package.
  • Knowledge and ability to communicate proficiently both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of Microsoft Office Suite 2010 or equivalent product.

Certifications/Licenses & Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Exercise Science, Physiology, Kinesiology, or related field AND two (2) years of experience in recreation or fitness setting.
  • Current group exercise instructor and personal training certification through ACE, AFAA, NSCA, ACSM, or other nationally recognized agency
  • Verified experience with training, teaching and instructing individuals and groups in a campus recreation setting.
  • Verified experience in the development and implementation of a comprehensive group fitness and personal training program in a campus recreation setting.
