Business Office Clerical
Duties:
- Prepare daily deposits and conducting daily cash counts.
- Enter financial and/or payroll data in software programs or spreadsheets.
- Reconciliation of month end revenue and expense reports for all administrative and sports club accounts.
- Maintaining and reconciling spreadsheets.
- Scanning, copying, filing, shredding, etc.

- Will be required to report to work at 8:00 a.m. at least two mornings a week.

Certified Aquatics Instructor
Duties
- High-quality instruction of learn-to-swim programming for all ages and skill levels
- Organization and instruction of 1-on-1 Private Swimming Lessons
- Prepare lesson plans and organize class time for all assigned lessons
- Work directly with coordinator of swimming lessons to maintain course records
- Maintain American Red Cross WSI certification
- Must be available for all staff trainings and in-services

Custodian
Position Summary
The Student Custodian position consists of assisting the Building Sub-Foreman with maintaining cleanliness of the Student Recreation Center. Responsibilities are evenly distributed by our Building Sub-Foreman based upon the number of student workers on duty. This position requires early morning hours starting as early as 6:00 a.m. and concluding as late as 11:00 p.m. Morning hours consist of any 2–3hr. timeframe students are available to work between the hours of 6:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Evening hours consist of working 8:00 – 11:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. Weekend hours are flexible and based upon the needs of the facility. Responsibilities
A. Assist the Building Sub-Foreman with dust and wet mopping floors/exercise mats, vacuuming entrance rugs and workout spaces w/artificial turf, emptying trash and recyclables, wiping down/disinfecting workout equipment, wiping down mirrors, wiping down windows and window ledges, as well as daily maintenance of our restrooms and locker rooms.
B. Maintain restroom and locker room cleanliness dust and wet mopping floors, cleaning mirrors, sinks, toilets, urinals, and partitions.
C. Maintain cleanliness of stairwells and hallways dust and wet mopping floors, wiping down exercise equipment on Upper Track, East Gym and Fitness Alley Hallway, disinfecting water fountains, day use lockers, handrails, entrance doors, and other surfaces as assigned.
D. Maintain cleanliness of Administrative Office and Lounges vacuuming floors, dusting furniture, emptying trash, wiping down windows, doors, walls, and other surfaces as assigned.
E. Assist with Special Event Setups (e.g. track meets, swim meets, open house events, and reserved spaces throughout Student Recreation Center)
Qualifications and Conditions of Employment
A. Must possess the physical strength and stamina to perform required work (e.g. periodic lifting or moving of equipment 30lbs or more.

A. Communicate effectively with supervisor, co-workers, fellow students, and community patrons.
B. Demonstrate ability to use custodial supplies and cleaning equipment.
C. Demonstrate ability to complete work related tasks as assigned by Building Sub-Foreman.
D. Demonstrate ability to communicate facility related issues of concern (e.g. toilet/urinal overflowing or not flushing, pipe(s) leaking, excessive spills, or hazardous conditions such as presence of bodily fluids).

Lifeguard
RSS Lifeguard
Responsible for performing work of routine difficulty in the enforcement of water safety and aquatics center regulations. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Crew Chief and Facility Aquatics Coordinator. Work involves swim safety instruction, enforcement of aquatic center rules and regulations, Becker Pavilion at Campus Lake rentals and supervision, special event staffing. Work is reviewed for conformance to generally accepted standards for aquatic center operations, and for compliance with the established policies of RSS Aquatics.
Essential Duties:
- Enforces aquatics center safety rules and regulations by monitoring water and deck areas to ensure a safe swimming experience for the public.
- Prevents injuries and minimizes hazardous situations.
- Responds to al injuries, accidents and emergency situations as they arise.
- Conducts swim tests for pool patrons, as needed, before they are allowed to go into deep water.
- Assists in the preparation of Becker Pavilion for opening and closing by setting up the staffing office, boats, and other equipment.
- By volunteer basis, staffing of facility Learn to Swim programs including Youth Swim Lessons, Adult Swim Lessons, and Private Swim Lessons.
- Interprets policies and procedures to the public, on site or by telephone.
- Attends mandatory staff meeting and training sessions to enhance job performance.
- All other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education, Experience & Other Requirements:
- Education and Experience Required
Completion and maintenance of formal lifeguard training and certification by the American Red Cross or Ellis Lifeguarding (Red Cross training within 6 months of hire).
- Education and Experience Preferred
Completion and maintenance of formal swim instructor training and certification (Water Safety Instructor) and Lifeguard Instructor Training (LGI) by the American Red Cross.
Knowledge, Skills, & Ability:
- Knowledge of swim center rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of standard water safety and lifesaving principles.
- Knowledge of first aid principles and practices.
- Considerable skill as a swimmer. Swim up to 500 yards continuously.
- Ability to communicate effectively in interpreting policies and procedures.

Exposure to Chlorinated water, sun, outdoor conditions, as well as general cleaning supplies. Adequate protective equipment will be available.
Physical Demands:
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate pool equipment.
- Visual, hearing and speaking skills to coach and communicate effectively with staff and patrons.

Member Services, Customer Service - Cashier
Duties:
- MUST be available to work evenings, weekends and breaks when designated.
- MUST be available to work at least 6-8 hours or more per week.
- Responsible for selling items through the point of sale system including but not limited to memberships, guest passes, personal training sessions, base camp rentals, and program registrations.
- Able to handle cash, record keeping and data entry.
- Responsible for answering inquiries regarding rental fees and RSS policies and procedures.
- Assist in the preparation of schedules and events.
- A positive customer service aptitude is required for both in person and telephone communications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed.
- Must be trustworthy, detailed oriented and reliable.

Reception Desk - Customer Services
Duties:
- MUST be available to work all times of the day (including early mornings, late nights and weekends).
- MUST be available to work academic breaks and holidays.
- Greet patrons upon entry into the building.
- Ensure established RSS entrance policies and procedures are followed.
- Ability to navigate member information within Fusion software program.
- Complete point of sale transactions and make deposits with Fusion software.
- A positive customer service aptitude is required for both in person and telephone communications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed.
- Must be trustworthy, detailed oriented and reliable.
- Must be available for all staff trainings.

Basecamp General Staff
Work Hours: 4-20 hours/weekly based on seniority within programGeneral Description: Basecamp staff will be given opportunities to work at the climbing wall, outdoor equipment rental center, and trips and workshops programs.
Specific Job Responsibilities: Basic duties consist of the following: rent outdoor equipment to patrons; oversee safe usage of climbing center and equipment; serve as program and event facilitator; utilize computer systems for gear inventory; ensure safe environment in all program areas (rental cage, climbing center, and clinics); and other duties as assigned. Work may involve the performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined space, lifting or carrying moderately heavy items (20-50 pounds), lifting watercraft and other gear, climbing, and exposure to heights. The work environment may involve exposure to various elements such as chemicals, dust, fumes, cold, heat, noise, vibrations, or dampness, where work exposes the employee to potentially non-disabling injuries. Duties may require that work be performed in adverse weather conditions. Work may require exposure to dangerous equipment and machinery requiring the use of protective clothing or gear.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a strong work ethic, a desire for personal and professional growth, good customer service skills, and a positive attitude. This position is very dynamic and students must be able to adapt quickly in adverse situations. Other relevant certifications, field experience and availability will be considered when choosing an applicant.
Competitive Sports Supervisor
Duties
- Intramural Sports
- Assist with the coordination of intramural sports leagues, tournaments, and contests.
- Supervise and manage nightly intramural activities.
- Train and evaluate intramural sport officials to adjudicate flag football, volleyball, softball, basketball, and soccer contests.
- Sport Clubs
- Assist with the management and supervision of the sport club program.
- Monitor sport club practices, contests, and meetings.
- Monitor use of RSS and Intercollegiate Athletics facilities.
- Administrative Duties:
- Complete daily paperwork and reports, specifically preparing score sheets and recording daily Competitive Sports participation.
- Prepare sport-clubs travel documents for access via Microsoft SharePoint or via travel binders.
- Communicative with players and sport club members via phone, e-mail, and face to face conversation.
- Assist with the management and maintenance of the Competitive Sports equipment inventory.
- Assist the Coordinator of Competitive Sports and RSS Marketing in the promotion and marketing of Competitive Sports activities.
- Assist the Coordinator of Competitive Sports with the creation and delivery of sports-specific training for sport officials.
- Cover the front desk in the RSS Administrative Office as required.
- General
- Supervise RSS and Competitive Sports special events.
- Attend all Competitive Sports training and meetings as required.

Sports Official
The RSS Competitive Sport Official is charged with ensuring fair and safe play by enforcing Competitive Sports and RSS rules, policies, and procedures during Intramural sport contests. As a group, sport officials serve as impartial arbiters, applying rules and rule interpretations on a situational basis. Through his or her actions, the RSS Sport Official serves as an educator, teaching the value of fair play, sportpersonship, emotional management, and effective communication.
Duties:
- Officiate scheduled intramural sports contests and RSS special events.
- Assist the Competitive Sports Supervisor in performing routine safety inspections.
- Assist the Competitive Sports Supervisor with pre-contest and post-contest tasks.
- Assist the Competitive Sports Supervisor in enforcing Competitive Sports, RSS, and SIU rules, policies, and procedures.
- Attend all required Competitive Sports and RSS meetings and trainings.
- Complete post-game reports as required.
Qualifications:

Internships

Recreational Sports and Services (RSS) is pleased to offer internship and practicum opportunities for SIU Carbondale students. Interested students can gain valuable practical experience in seven offices/areas within the Student Recreation Center.
We strive to create a unique experience for each intern, and we encourage interns to apply for their areas of interest. Interns may be asked to assist in other areas as needed.
General Information
RSS will support a maximum of two (2) internships per semester.
While all RSS internships are limited to one semester (Fall, Spring or Summer), a student may serve multiple semesters.
Semester Timelines:
- Fall: August/September – December
- Spring: January – May
- Summer: May/June - August
During the interview process, the student and RSS professional staff will determine weekly hours. The student is responsible for monitoring the fulfillment of academic internship or practicum hour requirements.

Compensation
All RSS internships are unpaid.
Outside of internship hours, students are welcome to apply for RSS employment or other opportunities at SIU or in the community.
Limited financial support may be available to support attendance at professional conferences, workshops, and seminars.

Specialty Class Instructors
Recreational Sports & Services is seeking applicants for instructors to teach a variety of Specialty Classes for each semester. Kickboxing, ballroom dance, fencing, tai chi, and pickleball are a few examples of potential classes. Instructional programs are typically offered over a six to eight-week session per semester.
Qualified candidates will either hold a certification in their area of specialty and/or have demonstrated experience in teaching their area of specialty as determined through previous employment. The RSS fitness coordinator and instructor determine the schedule. Proof of certifications or demonstrated experience will determine the rate of pay.
